Down with Love: Steamed Broccoli

Steamed Broccoli

Introduction

Steamed Broccoli. It hardly needs a recipe, but if you're new to cooking there's no harm in reviewing a very basic recipe. You're going to need a small saucepan, one that has a lid, and a steamer insert. There are also steamer pots available that essentially do the same thing. If you don't use the steamer, but simply put the broccoli in the water you have boiled vegetables, which are less crispy and, perhaps, less nutritious as well. Steam is our friend.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch of broccoli

Directions

BroccoliRinse the broccoli, removing any semi-broken flowerets. Chop off and discard the thick stem, usually an inch or two.
Cut the broccoli into smaller pieces, as shown.
Put the steamer in the sauce pan. Add enough water so that the bottom of the steamer is just touching the top of the water.
Bring the water to a boil.
Add the broccoli to the saucepan, cover, and turn down the heat to low. Cook for 5-10 minutes. Remove from the pan and serve.
Add the broccoli to the saucepan, cover, and turn down the heat to low. Cook for 5-10 minutes. It should be somewhat crisp and vibrant green, not washed out, olive or mushy. Remove from the pan and serve.
